In the past, Java programmers could only program such computations at the assembly-code level. But now that modern CPUs support advanced SIMD features (Single Instruction, Multiple Data), it becomes more important to take advantage of the performance gains that SIMD instructions and multiple lanes operating in parallel can bring.
